AAP Leader Ashish Khetan Allegedly Receives Death Threat From Fringe Hindu Groups AAP leader Ashish Khetan today claimed to have received a "death threat" from fringe Hindu groups, and demanded that Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh initiate action against the culprits. Khetan said that on 9 May he had received a letter stating that he had "crossed all levels" in committing sins against Hindu saints. "It is because of you (Khetan) that Sadhvi Pragya Singh (an accused in the 2006 Malegaon blasts case) and Virendra Singh Tawde (an accused in the case of murder of rationalist Narendra Dabholkar in 2013) are in jail. People like you deserve only death punishment in a Hindu Rashtra," the letter said. Hv got a letter claiming that my killing is imminent. Global Cyber Attack Also Struck India, Andhra Pradesh Police Computers Affected VIJAYWADA — A section of computers of Andhra Pradesh's police departments were affected by a global cyber attack on Saturday, authorities said. Computers in 18 police units in Chittoor, Krishna, Guntur, Visakhatpatnam and Srikakulam districts were affected. However, officials said the day-to-day functioning was not hampered. Director General of Police N. Sambasiva Rao said some standalone computers were affected and they were logged off as a precautionary measure. He said systems using the Windows operating system were hit by the cyber attack. The police chief's computer with Apple's iOS operating system was safe. A global cyber-attack using hacking tools believed to have been created by the US National Security Agency (NSA) has infected tens of thousands of computers in nearly 100 countries. R. Jaya Lakshmi, Superintendent of Police, Tirupati Urban, said that the 'ransomware' encrypted data in some police stations. She said they were not able to access data and that hackers were demanding ransom in digital currency bitcoin to restore access. The officer said that since the data was also stored in different offices in the police administration, they will be able to retrieve it. "The impact is minimal as we also keep offline record of FIRs and other documents," she said. Another officer said they were coordinating with the Home Ministry and were taking all precautions to protect the data. Meanwhile, the Telangana police said its computer systems were not affected. Rohtak Woman Brutally Gang-Raped And Murdered After Refusing Marriage Proposal ROHTAK — A woman was brutally gang-raped and murdered in Haryana's Rohtak. The incident occurred on 9 May and came to light when the victim's mutilated body was found in an empty plot in the city's IMT area. A postmortem has also been conducted. The victim had allegedly refused a marriage proposal, following which the accused reached her home a week later with his friends. A heated argument broke out which resulted in the woman slapping him. In revenge, the accused along with his friends allegedly raped and murdered her. The family of the victim said that on 9 May, at least five to six youth abducted her from the gate of a private company. After that the accused took her to a deserted place and gang-raped her. The victim's mother said that the accused had been pressurising the woman for marriage for the past one year. The forensic reports suggested that the victim was mutilated with sharp-edged weapons. Later, the accused tried to run her over to hide her identity. "The victim was tortured and her body was mutilated after the gang rape. She was killed after being raped involving at least seven people. Her skull was smashed in a way which indicates that she was run over by a vehicle in order to hide her identity," the forensic team has stated. The victim was living with her mother and brother and used to work in a private medicine company. The woman's parents had filed a missing complaint, based on which the police tracked her parents down. Her parents were called to Rohtak to identify her body. The distraught parents have claimed that this ghastly attack was carried out by the girl's neighbour and have demanded capital punishment for the rapists. Further investigation is underway. Job Creation Under Modi Government Plunges To Levels Even Below The UPA Regime: Report The India Exclusion Report 2016, released by the New Delhi-based Centre for Equity Studies (CES) on Friday, says that fewer jobs were created under the Modi government in 2015 compared to the previous government led by the Congress Party. Citing Labour Ministry Data, the report says that employment creation in 2015 plummeted to 135,000 jobs compared to 930,000 in 2011. "Yet more than half-way through his (Modi's) tenure, there are almost no jobs available. Job creation has fallen to levels even below those that the preceding UPA governments plunged to," the report says. The report also says that Dalits, Adivasis, Muslims and women, groups that have been traditionally oppressed, continue to be the most excluded from accessing public goods. The CES looks at four public goods: pensions for the elderly, digital access, agricultural land, and legal justice for undertrials. The rate of landlessness was highest among Dalits, at 57.3% followed by women-headed households at 56.8 percent and Muslims at 52.6%. Adivasis made up 40 percent displaced by "development activity." The report also says that the gap between the rich and the poor is widening. While post-1990 growth has gone up three times compared to the first four decades after Independence, the rate of poverty reduction slowed down from 0.94% per annum during 1981-1990 to only 0.65% between 1990 and 2005. Social activist Harsh Mander, who heads CES, told the Hindustan Times, "There is no doubt that lives of people have changed for better because of liberalisation but the promise of poverty eradication still remains to be fulfilled." "The gains have thrown new concerns of exclusion which needs to be addressed and discussed. In India, pensions cover only 40% of the elderly, landlessness among Dalits and Muslims is highest and these two (legally illiterate) communities are in high proportion in jails," he said. The report cites National Crime Record Bureau data that shows 65.56 per cent of all under-trials are from SC, ST, OBC communities. The report also says that "almost 1.063 billion Indians were offline even though India ranks among the top five nations in terms of the total number of Internet users." Sacked AAP Minister Kapil Mishra Accuses Kejriwal Of Using MLA As Shield, Says Next Expose Tomorrow Former Delhi minister Kapil Mishra mounted a fresh attack on Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, accusing him of using AAP MLAs as a "shield" after party legislator Sanjeev Jha announced a hunger strike to counter the rebel leader's ongoing fast. Jha was detained by the police while he was proceeding to stage the planned hunger strike outside Mishra's residence. He was taken to Sarai Rohilla police station. Jha has demanded that Mishra come clean on the claim that he saw Health Minister Satyendar Jain pay Rs 2 crore to Kejriwal. In an "open letter" to Kejriwal, Mishra, whose hunger strike entered the fourth day, again pressed for divulging the details of foreign tours undertaken by five leaders of the party. "How much drama will you create to hide one truth? You are trying all tactics to divert attention. You (Kejriwal) made a strategy to use MLAs as a shield. However, only one MLA came forward to be that shield." Mishra said, adding that his next "expose" would be tomorrow. Earlier in the day, Jha, who is an MLA from Burari, went to Rajghat, Mahatma Gandhi's memorial, to "seek blessings". "On May 7, Kapil Mishra had said that Arvind Kejriwal had met Satyendar Jain where he paid him Rs 2 crore. My question to him is at what time did he meet the chief minister? Which car did he use? I have the entire day's video footage (of people entering Kejriwal)," Jha said. "The whole world knows about Kejriwal's credentials and he (Mishra) should give evidence to back his claim. If it turns out to be true, even I will join him in his hunger strike against Kejriwal." Mishra hit back at Jha with another "open letter" and "advised" him to drink lots of water during the hunger strike. Osama Bin Laden’s Son Poised To Lead Al Qaeda, Avenge His Father’s Death: Ex-FBI Agent WASHINGTON — Osama bin Laden's son Hamza is poised to lead a stronger, larger al Qaeda and is "bent on avenging" his father's death, according to a former FBI agent familiar with the personal letters seized in a dramatic US raid that killed the al Qaeda leader in Pakistan's Abbottabad.Hamza, about 28 year old now, wrote those letters when he was 22 and had not seen his father bin Laden in several years.Ali Soufan, the former FBI agent who was the bureau's lead investigator of al Qaeda after the 9/11 attacks, told CBS News the letters reveal Hamza to be a young man who adores his father and wants to carry on his murderous ideology. The letters collected in the raid by helicopter-borne US Navy SEALs at a secure high-walled compound in Abbottabad, a garrison town north of the Pakistani capital, Islamabad, in May 2011 have now been declassified.Only a handful of US military and senior officials around then US President Barack Obama knew of the raid that was reportedly in the planning for months. For a new episode of '60 Minutes' on the network, Mr Soufan described one of those letters from Hamza: "He tells him that…he remembers 'every look…every smile you gave me, every word you told me.'"Hamza also wrote this: "I consider myself to be forged in steel. The path of jihad for the sake of God is what we live."Mr Soufan said Hamza's potential as a leader was recognised years ago when he was still a boy. He was used in propaganda videos, sometimes holding a gun."He was a poster kid for the al Qaeda…and for members of al Qaeda, who were indoctrinated with these propaganda videos, he means a lot to them," Mr Soufan said. This January, the US named Hamza a "specially-designated global terrorist" – the same classification bin Laden had.He even sounds like his father, said Mr Soufan. "His recent message that came out, he delivered the speech as if it's his father…using sentences, terminology that was used by Osama bin Laden."Hamza has recorded four audio messages in the last two years. "He's basically saying, 'American people, we're coming and you're going to feel it. And we're going to take revenge for what you did to my father…Iraq… Afghanistan'…the whole thing was about vengeance," Soufan said. Did The System Fail The Breathalyzer Test In Serving Justice For Sonika Singh Chauhan? For years my mother has been addicted to a Bengali soap opera called Ichhe Nodi. She has periodically stopped watching it in protest against its absurd plot twists, despaired that when everything seemed resolved it has sprouted a brand new love triangle, but like a true addict she has always eventually returned to it. These days though the news holds more interest for her than the soap. Biponno Bikram (Endangered Bikram) at 8, the newscaster promises breathlessly, as if it was another must-watch plot turn in the long-running serial. This time though it's real. In reel life, Vikram Chatterjee, the hero of Ichhe Nodi, has already been through an accident. He has shown up with a bandage around his head. In true soap tradition he has lost his memory. And in even truer soap fashion he has in his amnesiac state almost married a new woman setting in a motion the usual soap battle of two women over one man. But through everything Chatterjee portrays a man of unimpeachable integrity, a character trait that he conveys with a perpetual frown. His character Anurag would rather go to jail (and he does) than cut a deal with a lying woman. In real life, Vikram is coming across as less noble-minded. My mother purses her lips when she reads about him in the morning newspaper. There's a hashtag going around on social media these days – #JusticeForSonika. Sonika Singh Chauhan was the model who was killed in a fatal car crash on April 29 in Kolkata. Vikram was the man driving the car. He walked away from the crash with a few stitches and a lot of unanswered questions. Read: What Happened On The Night Kolkata Model Sonika Singh Chauhan Died In A Car Crash Chatterjee has confessed he had drinks but says he was not intoxicated that night. He has claimed the car was not going at 120 kmph as some had claimed but 60-70 kmph. He has refused to comment on what happened to cause it to lose control and ram into a jewellery shop. And he wishes he had died, not Sonika Singh Chauhan. But not surprisingly whether or not Chatterjee was actually intoxicated, this has quickly become another story of Driving While Drunk (and Rich/Famous/Privileged). Some wonder why #JusticeForSonika is needed. She was not some hapless person sleeping on the pavement in the way of an out-of-control car. Some wonder why #JusticeForSonika is needed. She was not some hapless person sleeping on the pavement in the way of an out-of-control car. She was someone who willingly got into the car with Chatterjee. It was her choice after all. But that misses the point. The responsibility ultimately lies with the person accused of drunk driving. The buck stops there. Even Chatterjee admits that. "I was in the driver's seat," he says unlike a certain Bollywood superstar. But there's another reason #JusticeForSonika is trending. This kind of story happens all too often. What's also distressingly familiar is what happens after it breaks. We have all read about what happened with Salman Khan, lawyer Janhavi Gadkar and Sanjeev Nanda, the industrialist scion whose BMW crashed through a police checkpoint, killing six. These are not just stories of driving under influence. These inevitably become stories of how the rich and the powerful, the VIP and the minor celebrity all rely on immunity that comes with their status. Phone calls are made. Police move slowly. Bail comes quickly. Witnesses disappear. Cases move glacially with adjournment after adjournment. That fear is the real impetus for #JusticeForSonika. For sure Vikram is innocent until proven guilty. Some of the channels triumphantly claim that their relentless journalism has forced him to admit he has drunk that night though he has only admitted to having drinks which is not the same as being intoxicated. But watching that drama just reminds us again and again of Salman Khan calmly claiming he only drank water at the bar. Salman Khan said he was neither drunk nor driving. Vikram says he was neither drunk nor speeding recklessly. It all starts sounding eerily familiar. That, despite alcohol beyond the permissible limit showing up in his blood, even 12 hours after the accident, when the blood test was eventually done. Khan said he was neither drunk nor driving. Vikram says he was neither drunk nor speeding recklessly. It all starts sounding eerily familiar. But what is more aggravating each and every time is how the system aids and abets the powerful or even the semi-powerful. The courts stayed open late to allow Salman Khan to get bail after the initial conviction. In this case, Vikram got bail for Rs 1000. The police finally sent his blood for testing some six days after the tragedy. As a forensics expert said on 24 Hours television, now thanks to the delay, questions can be raised about the reliability of the results, of the way the blood was stored. Salman Khan too blamed the procedure for examination of his blood as faulty after it showed alcohol content. Instead of establishing or disproving a simple case of drunk driving, we get a political battle. The BJP has jumped into the action wondering if higher-ups in Trinamool are shielding Vikram. "Why are the police going so slow with the probe?" asks actor and BJP leader Rupa Ganguly. "Why did so many important people close to the state government help Vikram get bail?". A rally for Sonika Singh Chauhan becomes a demand for West Bengal to become an alcohol-free state according to my Whatsapp forward. The problem of drunk driving cannot be underestimated. Johnson J Edayaranmula, then executive director of the Indian Alcohol Policy Alliance, claimed that in a country where 1.2 lakh people are killed in road accidents, a sizeable proportion is due to drunk driving. A study in Kerala, he says, found that 57% of those who came into prison did so because of a crime committed under the influence of alcohol. But the problem is not alcohol as much as a law apparatus that's willing to bend the law for the high and mighty, the powerful and connected. But the problem is not alcohol as much as a law apparatus that's willing to bend the law for the high and mighty, the powerful and connected. The problem is the confidence that you can drink, drive and if anything happens, you can still get away with it. Too often they do. Khan was eventually acquitted of all charges after being sentenced to five years in prison. Nanda was acquitted and then re-tried but had his prison sentence reduced and was sentenced to community work. Jahnavi Gadkar got her car and license back in December 2015 before it was revoked in January 2016. Vikram Chatterjee is back to shooting for Ichhe Nodi. The soap has already changed its storyline to reflect the new reality. "In the script, someone would break the news that Anurag had had an accident. While the car was found, he was untraceable," said scriptwriter Leena Gangopadhyay. Soon Anurag will return with a bandage around his head, reality colliding with fiction. But one thing is for sure, there will be no mention of a Sonika Singh Chauhan found dead in that car. Nor will there be a whiff of alcohol anywhere. In Ichhe Nodi, the hero, as always, will be above reproach. But the anger over the death of Sonika Singh Chauhan is less about the gap between reel and reality. It's about the growing fear that yet again, the system could fail the breathalyzer test for one law for everybody. Years Before Tharoor, Journalist Mehdi Hasan Said In A Viral Speech: ‘Farrago Of Distortions, Misrepresentations’ When Shashi Tharoor responded to Arnab Goswami's newly launched Republic TV and their allegations relating to the death of his wife Sunanda Pushkar, he sent a nation scurrying to find a dictionary. Tharoor's characteristically eloquent but somewhat over the top verbosity immediately sparked off a flurry of memes. The allegations were all but forgotten. Turns out, the attention grabbing part of Tharoor's internet breaking tweet–"farrago of distortions and misrepresentations" was used in a famous debate a few years ago. At a debate held at the Oxford Union in the wake of Fusilier Lee Rigby's brutal murder in 2013, Mehdi Hasan, a British political journalist used the same sequence of words in a very similar sentence. The uncanny resemblance in the speech was spotted by Free Press Kashmir. "An astonishing set of speeches so far making this case tonight. A mixture of just cherry-picked quotes, facts and figures, self-serving, selective… a farrago of distortions, misrepresentations, misinterpretations, misquotations…," Hasan said during his arguments. Hasan was arguing for the motion "This House believes Islam is a religion of peace" against the opposing arguments of Anne-Marie Waters, Daniel Johnston and Peter Atkins. Watch it at 3:01 minute. Hasan's feisty speech went viral on the internet, garnering more than 2 million views, becoming a booster shot to his reputation as a speaker. Hasan is the co-author of a biography of Ed Miliband and formerly worked as political director at HuffPost UK. He is the presenter of the Al Jazeera English shows: The Café, Head to Head and UpFront. Years after this particular speech, Tharoor himself became a star of a later Oxford Union debate on colonialism that went viral. The Congress MP brilliantly argued why Britain owes reparations for its exploitation of the subcontinent. "It's a bit rich to oppress, enslave, kill, torture, maim people for 200 years and then celebrate the fact that they are democratic at the end of it. We were denied democracy, so we had to snatch it, seize it from you," he said at the debate "This House Believes Britain Owes Reparations to her Former Colonies". He was speaking in favour. His speech went viral on the internet, garnering nearly 4 million views, and spawned his latest book: 'An Era of Darkness: The British Empire in India'. After Honest Cabbie Returns Bag With Goods Worth ₹8 Lakh, Radio Channel Raises ₹70k To Pay Off His Debt Debendra Kapri, a 24-year-old taxi driver working in Delhi, made headlines for his exemplary honesty. It was a regular working day for Kapri on 3 May, when he picked up his passenger, Mubisher Wani, from New Delhi's domestic airport in his 'black-yellow' taxi and dropped him off in central Delhi's Paharganj area. After Wani got down, the driver noticed that he had left his bag behind in the taxi. So, Kapri went to the domestic airport police station and deposited the bag with the police. According to Sanjay Bhatia, DCP (Airport), the bag contained foreign currency, gold jewellery, a laptop, and an iPhone, all worth ₹8 lakh, as well as important documents such as passport and visa papers. The police found a wedding card in the bag that had a mobile number. They called the number which belonged to Wani's brother. Shortly thereafter, Wani arrived at the police station to claim the bag. Radio Mirchi then invited Kapri over to their studio and launched a fundraiser for him. Popular RJ Naved Khan, who hosts The Naved Khan Show, requested his listeners to contribute and help the honest driver. Gaurav Sharma (@MildlyClassic) who produces The Naved Khan Show at Radio Mirchi launched the campaign titled, "Help This Honest Taxi Driver Repay His Loan." The goal was to raise ₹70k. "We got to know that he has a loan of 70k that he was struggling to pay off. We decided to call him to the Mirchi studios on the morning show [The Naved Khan Show] of May 10th and ask Delhi to help him pay off his loan," Sharma told HuffPost India. Support poured in as large-hearted Dilliwale opened their purses and wallets to help Kapri pay off his debts. Within an hour Radio Mirchi was able to raise over ₹90k. "We set up a campaign on Milaap.org. At 9:30 AM, Debendra was in the studio and the campaign went live. We announced it on radio and directed the listeners to Mirchi Facebook Page and Naved's Facebook page. The donations started pouring in. We crossed the 70k mark in 1 hour! And by 11:00 AM we were at 90k. We then closed the campaign as the target was already achieved," Sharma said. Along with donations, came words of praise for Kapri's honesty. RJ Naved took to his Facebook page to thank everyone who had contributed.
