Despite a below par score, Mumbai Indians (MI) went the distance and defended the lowest total in Indian Premier League (IPL), to clinch the title for the third time. Playing at Hyderabad’s Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium, Mumbai defeated Rising Pune Supergiant (RPS) by a thrilling 1-run margin. Mitchell Johnson was handed the ball in the final over and RPS required 11 runs to seal the deal. Many would have fancied the batting side to ease through with Manoj Tiwary and Steven Smith in the middle. However, Johnson turned the game around with consecutive wickets of Tiwary and Smith. Parthiv Patel, who was squealing to keep the morale of his teammates high, hailed Johnson for his last-over heroics. Speaking to BCCI, Parthiv explained the last over, “It was brilliant. Mitchell Johnson has been bowling really well. With a couple of wickets (Tiwary and Smith were dismissed off successive balls), the game came in our favour.” The wicketkeeper-batsman further added, “We were definitely under pressure after Tiwary had hit the first ball for four. But that is where I think experience comes in (to play).” Parthiv also insisted that 130 was a par score and the batsmen lower down the order made it up for missed out runs.
Earlier this year, Parthiv lifted maiden Ranji Trophy title for Gujarat. Parthiv was also the leading run-scorer for MI as he amassed 395 runs at an average of 24.68. He was the only Mumbai batsman to find his name amongst the top 10 of the Orange Cap list.
